Working with Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Young People

(delivered by Barnardo's for registered service managers - East Midlands)

This one-day online session will provide staff with an understanding of their role and responsibilities in relation to safeguarding and supporting Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking (UAS) Young People.

The session will cover the following learning outcomes:

  • Understand the legal definition in relation to unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.
  • Understand case law and the legal status applied to unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.
  • Consider the experience and needs of unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.
  • Recognise the impact that being separated from family has for unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.
  • Recognise the impact of trauma and its effects on unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.
  • Understand the risk of children being trafficked and exploited.
  • Consider your roles and responsibilities when working with unaccompanied asylum seeking young people.
  • Have knowledge of the support services that are available for unaccompanied asylum seeking young people.

We are running 9 sessions for supported accommodation registered service managers and each of these sessions has been allocated a region so that colleagues can make regional connections and support each other. 2 sessions will be run for local authorities registering as providers of supported accommodation. (please book on the appropriate session dependent on your role/region)

The course is being delivered by Barnardo's Training & Consultancy and is available free of charge.
